Too good to be true

Written By Sandra on Wednesday 28 May 2008 | 14:14

Although we are bombed with tones of “fancy and modern” groceries (and I believe that some of them are healthy indeed), often we forget that true value lies in simple things. It wouldn’t be that bad if sometimes we could go back to our roots and try to have some fun with one simple and “very dull” cabbage.

Cabbage (sauerkraut, lat. Brassica oleracea) is very old and ancient plant whose usage goes back to prehistory time to areas on European coast, and it is known that old Slavs discovered the way how to prepare sauerkraut and this way is used in today’s time.

Nutritive value of cabbage is huge and it is hard for me to count all the beneficial effects that cabbage can offer us, but even little children know that the best cure in the world for the worst hangover is souse (liquid which appears in process of making sauerkraut).

There are many brands of cabbage and the most famous and the most outspreaded are white cabbage and red cabbage, but we won’t make a mistake if we chose any cabbage at all, because both brands are rich with vitamin C (white cabbage from 30 – 60 mg/100g, red cabbage from 42-70 mg/100g). Calcium/phosphor ratio in cabbage gives the best efficiency of calcium, so that’s also one of the reasons why we should eat more cabbage.

I’m not nutritionist so I won’t make more analyses, I’d rather give few lines about issues are more appropriate (and important) to ordinary people, and these are curative properties of cabbage and its’ usage in public medicine.

Headache – take few leafs of fresh, white cabbage and put it in a warm oven (not hot) so it softens a bit. Put those warm and soft leafs on your forehead. Repeat it three times a day.

Gastric ulcer and ulcer – freshly squeezed white cabbage juice cures all kind of ulcers and colitis. Cure lasts for three or four weeks, and every day you drink about 0,5 to 1 liter of cabbage juice (divided through the day).

Fresh cabbage found its’ purpose even in natural cosmetics – you can make facial mask of finely scrubbed white cabbage and put it on your face for 20-30 minutes (it is good for all facial scars).

Today, it is very hard to imagine living through the winter without sauerkraut (pickled cabbage) and it is recommended to have it on your menu because of it is rich with vitamin C. People who suffer from stomach problems, constipation, scurvy and anemia must eat sauerkraut mixed with chopped onions and olive oil.

Cabbage acts antiseptic and if you prepare it like a tea or soup, it can be used as a cure for cough or flu.

Very good post! As always I learn something from you. Now I understand why my fiancee can eat an incredible amount of fresh cabbage, more than me, and I DO like cabbage: He smokes. As with tomato, kiwi and orange, he craves for anything that can give an extra dose of the Vitamin C he loses with cigarettes.
